On Thursday 11 August, the Sociability team headed to Harrogate for another day of mapping. It turned out to be one of the hottest days of the year, but that did not stop us from adding dozens of new venues to the Sociability app!

In the morning, Jennie and I started mapping venues near the train station, including Hotel Chocolat, The Yorkshire Soap Company, and The White Company. One thing we noticed immediately is how aesthetically pleasing Harrogate is. If you are looking for impressive, "Instagrammable" spots, Harrogate is a fantastic choice.

We were also delighted to be joined by several friends who had previously attended our York mapping day. Having a larger team meant we could cover more ground and film some great content for our socials (head over to our Instagram to watch the reels!).

How accessible is Harrogate?

With 7 of us as wheelchair users coasting around Harrogate, we managed to access most places, but we did find certain areas tricky.

As Harrogate is an old Victorian spa town, there are several cobblestone streets and some steep, rocky hills to navigate. However, if you stay central, the terrain is much flatter. We found that while some smaller shops were not naturally step-free, most were happy to provide a ramp upon request.

We know that "ramps on request" are not ideal for everyone, as they often require a companion to go inside and ask if there is no doorbell. This is where the Sociability app becomes essential: it helps you identify which accessible places in Harrogate have permanent level access and which require a little extra coordination.

Top Recommendations for Harrogate

While we mapped many venues, here are a few highlights for your next visit:

  • The Victoria Shopping Centre: A very reliable spot for step-free shopping with lift access to all floors and clean accessible toilets.

  • Station Parade: This area near the train station has several modern shops and cafés that have prioritised level thresholds.

  • The Stray: For a bit of fresh air, this massive open parkland is largely flat and offers paved paths that are perfect for powerchairs and manual wheelchairs alike.

Finding our community

Most importantly, we agreed that mapping days for us is key to feeling connected with the community. We can really see how much the mapping days are bringing disabled people together, which is important when sometimes it can feel like you’re the only person in your bubble. To finish here’s what Azariah had to say about the day “I love doing mapping days with Sociability. Disabled being helping disabled people, nothing could be better”.

We couldn't agree more!
