Harrogate Mapping Day!

Aug 30, 2022

On Thursday 11th August, the Sociability team headed to Harrogate for another day of mapping. It turned out to be one of the hottest days of the year but that didn’t stop us mapping lots of venues to the Sociability app! In the morning Jennie and I started mapping venues near the train station such as Hotel Chocolat, The Yorkshire Soap Company and The White Company. One thing we noticed is how pretty and aesthetically pleasing Harrogate is. So if you like to find impressive-looking places for your Instagram pics, Harrogate is a great place to go to!

We were so pleased to see some of our friends who joined the York mapping day earlier this year, came to join us again for Harrogate too. Not only did we manage to film a few cheeky reels, (head over to Instagram to watch them!) It also meant that we managed to map lots of venues on the Sociability app - winner!

How accessible is Harrogate?

With 7 of us as wheelchair users coasting around Harrogate, although we managed to access most places - we definitely found that some parts were tricky. As it’s an old town there are a few cobblestone streets as well as some steep rocky hills to navigate. However, if you stay central - there are much flatter areas. We found although a few were not step free, most places had ramps when requested. Although, we know this isn’t ideal for everyone as it does require needing someone to go in and ask for the ramp if there is no bell outside. So it’s definitely something to think about when you are heading to Harrogate - Sociability will be able to help you navigate the places suitable for you. We did find everyone we met to be so helpful, enthusiastic about our mission and provided access wherever possible.

Finding our community

Most importantly, we agreed that mapping days for us is key to feeling connected with the community. We can really see how much the mapping days are bringing disabled people together, which is important when sometimes it can feel like you’re the only person in your bubble. To finish here’s what Azariah had to say about the day “I love doing mapping days with Sociability ☺️. Disabled being helping disabled people, nothing could be better”.

We couldn't agree more!
